Roger Stritmatter was awarded his PhD in comparative literature by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst last year after defending his dissertation on The Marginalia of Edward de Vere's Geneva Bible. The title of his thesis does not indicate the uniqueness of this doctorate since Stritmatter is the only scholar in the United States to be granted a PhD for research conducted on the 17th Earl of Oxford as the author of the Shakespeare canon. That unique status makes this published dissertation compelling by itself. In addition to that distinction, Stritmatter adds to the existing evidence proving De Vere's authorship of the Shakespeare canon through his analysis of the 1568-70 Geneva Bible, originally owned and annotated by the 17th Earl of Oxford and now owned by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. (Folger shelf mark 1427). It includes a detailed paleographical analysis, a review of the authorship question, and considers the chronology of the plays and poems. Stritmatter also refutes the claim of critics that the connections of the De Vere Bible and Shakespeare are random. |
